Reading and Spelling with Phonics
Reading and Spelling with Phonics is a highly effective yet simple phonics approach which combines reading, writing and spelling. Children learn all their phonograms in relationship to words and begin to read simple words on the first day of instruction. The teacherís manual explains step by step how to present each phonogram and clearly states spelling rules as children use them in the grade-level spelling lists. The kit includes: the teacherís manual with the phonics instruction and 4000 spelling words for grades 1-6, 70 phonogram flashcards (printed in italic handwriting with a and g duplicated in regular type), a 70-page First Grade Reading and Spelling Notebook, two 35-page practice writing tablets and a laminated quick reference card of spelling and pronunciation rules.
We recommend using the Italic Handwriting Series from Portland State University with the phonics program. Children should go through Book A (or another beginning penmanship book) before beginning their phonics instruction. Then they can use Book B in first grade with the phonics course, Book C in second grade, Book D in third grade and so on.
